HARMONIC FILTER DESIGN & ANALYSIS



All rectifier systems will produce current and voltage harmonic distortion on the AC supply system and will also shift the power factor in the lagging direction.  For this reason, harmonic filtering and power factor correction equipment are often required.  Due to the ever increasing concern by power utilities and their customers in power quality, this portion of the rectifier system continues to take on an increased level of importance.

Our BPEC rectifier system computer analysis and design program was developed, in part, to accurately design the PF correction and harmonic filtering equipment needed to meet the customer's PF requirements and harmonic distortion limits.  When provided with the customers AC supply system parameters and the load operating points, the computer analysis will determine the required amount of capacitive kVAR needed to correct the power factor at the operating conditions and the filters required to meet the harmonic distortion limits.

BPEC has extensive experience supplying all popular types of PF correction/harmonic filtering equipment.  PF correction capacitors are available in either enclosed banks or open racks for indoor or outdoor use.  Tuning reactors are available in dry-type, air core stacks, oil-filled iron core, or dry-type iron core styles.

We can also provide microprocessor-based, automatic Power Factor controllers which switch filter branch circuit breakers on and off to maintain the Power Factor and the system voltage within prescribed limits, throughout a changing load profile.
